The Annandale area was complete wilderness when William Fitzhugh purchased the land in 1685 and converted it into a tobacco plantation. His descendants named the plantation Ravensworth. The plantation land was divided and bought by farmers before 1830. Later on the land was named Annandale after a village in Scotland. Roads built in the early 19th century connected Annandale with other communities in northern Virginia. The first post office in Annandale was opened in 1837.
