The town’s name was changed to the Town of Providence in 1805. People in the area referred to the town as Fairfax Court House, and it was officially named the Town of Fairfax in 1874. The town consisted of the courthouse, a few blocks of businesses and some small farms until the 1950s. Population in the area increased during the 1950s and 1960s. The Town of Fairfax was incorporated as the City of Fairfax in 1961. Development in nearby Fairfax County contributed to the city’s continued growth.
