History

Settlers from Virginia’s Tidewater region moved to the Fairfax area in the early 18th century. This area was established as Fairfax County in 1742. The first county court in the area was established in 1742, and a new courthouse opened in 1800. The little town around the courthouse was originally known as Earp’s Corner. The town’s name was changed to the Town of Providence in 1805. People in the area referred to the town as Fairfax Court House, and it was officially named the Town of Fairfax in 1874. The town consisted of the courthouse, a few blocks of businesses and some small farms until the 1950s. Population in the area increased during the 1950s and 1960s. The Town of Fairfax was incorporated as the City of Fairfax in 1961. Development in nearby Fairfax County contributed to the city’s continued growth.
